Sunburnt Zyg
Submitted by Anton on Tue, 08/01/2008 - 00:57
Here in Adelaide we are having had the hottest summer since records started being kept, over 120 years ago.
The temperatures have regularly topped the high 30sC and we have even had a few days in the low 40sC with humidity in the single digits.
As a result, my Zyg Arthur 'Elle' x Helen Khu has severely sunburnt leaves, I thought it was protected enough in between my Cyms, but obviously
not in the extreme temperatures we have been experiencing.
My question: Will this have an adverse effect on the plant, or will it recover OK ?
It had a set back last year, and I was nurturing it back to reasonable health, and then this happens.
I have since placed it in my green house which is set up for tropical orchids with relatively high humidity and is insulated against temperature extremes.
Is there anything else I need to do to help it recover?
Any and all comments appreciated.
I can attach an image if required.

I think posting the photo Anton would be a very good idea.

Zygo
Anton, As you know most Zygo's have soft plicate leaves which don't tolerate sunlight of any intensity, but with your recent soaring temperatures I am not suprised it has sunburn. Over here in the UK these plants are normally grown cool to intermediate and detest water on the leaves which can cause discolouration and unsightly spotting. But given a shaded cooler position with good air movement I am sure that it will survive and revive, hybrids tend to be more resilient than the species.

Zygo Update
I have put it back into the green house and already it is starting to shows good signs of recovery.
After removing the blackened leaves from the pseudobulbs, the two unburnt sets of leaves left are really standing upright once again and have good colour since being put in the green house.
The one I have is an Arthur 'Elle' x Helen Khu and hasn't flowered in 3 seasons, that is why I was so concerned about having ANOTHER set back, and losing yet another season of flowers.
I have pictures of it when it was flowering, on my web site in the orchid section. www.antondrew.com
You'll see why I want to baby it,it has lovely highly scented flowers.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Another Zygo update
That's good news Anton, there is nothing worse than loosing a good plant.
Now that it is recovering you might like to change it's label to Z. Brookside (Z. Helen-Ku x Z. Artur Elle)
That's the correct spelling of the parent plants in brackets, it was registered by Orch. Los Osos in 1994.
Good luck with it, hope it flowers again for you on the next good growth.

Well I never ..........
Thanks Bill, all the time I had it I didn't know that.
Now, ORIGINALLY, I HAD the name as "ARTUR" and was told this is wrong, it should be 'ARTHUR" with a "T".
Which camp IS correct ?????? :o| I have seen it spelt both ways on the net, really confusing.
Good to know it's name is Brookside though, helpful for when I get show it at our club.
thanks
Anton
Artur or Arthur???
I had a feeling you would want to clarify the name, it just doesn't look right does it, without the "h".The way I have written it in brackets above (both parent plant names) is the 100% correct spelling.
How I found the name--- Using your info above I checked the Wildcatt data base (non Web accessed), found what looked like the correct name and then went back and confirmed the name on the RHS grex name search.
As for "which camp" is right, when it comes to plant name registration there is only one camp, the "RHS camp".(try registering a plant name that doesn't match their data base)

re Artur
That's for the clarification Bill.
I may have mentioned that I originally referred to it by the tag name "ARTUR" up until early last year, but I was corrected by someone who I thought knew the correct spelling and had been orchids a lot longer than me.
OBVIOUSLY they were WRONG!
OK, Just to play safe, I kept the original tag anyway. :o)
Guess I'll put it back......... with the addition....... 'Brookside'. :o)
Thanks again Bill.
