Dendrobium malbrownii

I don’t have this one in my collection, but have seen it around on the benches labelled as Dendrobium malbrownii.

outside the range

ah...but this plant came from New Guinea which is outside the range of Dendrobium malbrownii Jean.

I found the post I was talking about http://www.orchidsonline.com.au/node/6650

Found in New Guinea and northern Qld

info

where did you find that info?

Australian Native Book

I have a book here on Aust and NG species.

you're right

I just checked the bible...(Australian Indigenous Orchids by AW Dockrill) and yes it's there in black and white.

My only defense is that maybe it was not recorded for PNG in the first edition which was my first copy. (well it was the libraries copy really)

Thanks Jean!

Yeah sure

I will believe you this time.

compare to this one http://www.orchidspecies.com/denmalbrownii.htm

juries not back

wait on....the case is not shut yet.

The line drawings are not a 100% match either. This was why I originally agreed with the tag in what it said 'affinity malbrownii'

I still think this looks a lot like a Glomera species...plant form and flower features.

second look

after a second and third look at the flower closeup of West's I'm not so sure either.

This one (posted here) does look like what you would say is a Dendrobium.

good link

The photo link is good Jean but it seems to me it confirms this is not D. malbrownii.

The flowers are both Dendrobiums I reckon but not the same species....

Open two tabs (or windows) and click back and forth.

I opened the links and the

I opened the links and the book to compare and allowing for the differences of the photos and colour variation between individual plants it looked the same to me. I don’t have the plant in my collection to compare.

anther

Not that the closeup photo of mine is very clear really but my plant seems so much more angular in the shape of the petals and sepals. The anther in the one shown in the link is also in agreement with Dockrill's description, "very dark purple, almost black" while my one is whitish to cream and a little different in shape I think.

Wellsy, your plant looks like

Wellsy, your plant looks like Den. bilobum to me. D. bilobum has a pale anther and a dark labelum but with yellow on the labelum tip just like yours. See: Page 223 of "Dendrobium and its Relatives", by Bill Laverack, Wayne Harris, Geoff Stocker

searching all day

Thanks Alex.
I have been searching for a photo all day but been unable to find one yet.
I dont have the book you mentioned so I cannot check it.

Regards wellsy

Wellsy, see the pdf

Wellsy, see the pdf attachment to my email just sent

Agree with you

West
I have the book open here and after comparing the flowers in second photo to the book, I agree with you on this one.

finally get the right name

Thanks Alex and Jean!

The photo in the pdf pretty well goes to 100% certainty on this identification as Dendrobium bilobum.

It's fantastic to finally get the right name on my plant.

Regards wellsy

PS

This has been mislabelled for at least 25 years that I know of and the person who gave me the plant probably had the plant another 10 or so before that.
All round a great result!
