Singapore Botanic Gardens
The Central Core is one of five gardens and is the main attraction at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. This is where the National Orchid Garden is situated. Admission fee is $5 per adult but students and senior citizens only pay $1. It has well over 1000 species and hybrids are twice this amount.
National Orchid Garden is divided into 6 sections – Burkill Hall is a colonial bungalow built in 1866 by Isaac and Humphrey Burkill. The Orchidarium is a species only garden which is currently planted with well over 500 species. The VIP Orchid Garden provides an orchid breeding program started by Eric Holttum in 1928. This is where State Visitors and other VIPs are honoured by naming selected orchid hybrids after them. Tan Hoon Siang Misthouse as the name suggests this shadehouse is constantly misted and it exhibits rare orchid cultivars. Yuen-Peng McNeice Bromeliad House exhibits hundreds of Bromeliad specie and hybrids. Most of these Broms was acquired from Shelldance Nursery USA in 1994. Then there is the Cool house containing carnivorous plants and cool growing orchids such as Masdevallias. This would be the first time I’ve heard of a cool house!!!
