An Online Orchid Society?
I think it is possible that we should all consider the possibility of forming an assosciation or something like that and have a shot at making this community a more formal arrangement? Like an orchid society that only meets online? Why not? Any thoughts? Please post a comment below.

on-line association?
I value this site and want to see it continue. But I'm not clear what additional advantage will accrue from a more formal association. Wouldn't officers and elections and so on detract from what we already have? I don't mean to be negative though, just enquiring. If the people who do all the work think its a good idea to formalise things then I suppose I would be pleased if OOL continued in any way that provided the same level of expert support and a fantastic knowledge bank,

on-line association
It sounded like a good idea but with more thought I agree with you Stephen.
At this stage I can't see what benefit would be gained, I think we should get over the SERVER problem first and leave this idea alone for a while.

On line society
You are right Bill, this sort of thing can cause huge problems, once you become a formal society, you then have to be incorporated with the justice department, which state do you do this with?, you then have to have monthly committee meetings, with the committee in attendance, which means your committee would all have to be local to each other. a huge nightmare if you ask me, I have been on a few committees in my time, so I know the problems that can ensue.
Davo.
pool of money
My main concern is that now there is the complicating factor of a pool of money which needs to remain accountable.
What are the legal ramifications of that? Anyone know how we can manage that to the tax departments satisfaction?
pool of money
Yep, I can see the problem, best to cover ones butt rather than leave it open to innuendo.
Something we never thought of.

If it should be necessary for tax purposes to form a not-for-profit association, lets make it the "Beenleigh Orchids Online". I belive that an association does not have to be incorporated. Any one in the world may be a member. Members of any association are not obliged to attend any meetings even if meetings are called. At most one meeting a year may be required and if the constitution only required the quorum to be three members, Wellsy should be able to russel up two more members once a year to hold a brief AGM. The BOO Association could have an internet accessible bank account with Wellsy or some one else as the trustee. The bank account would mainly be used to accumulate donations and at most a few times a year mony would be withdrawn for the agreed association purposes.
The terms and conditions (T&C) of membership of BOO association need be, at most, only slightly different to the current T&C of being a member of this site Anyone wishing to join BOO would do so as they need to do now to join this site. If at any time it be decided to have a membership fee and/or joining fee, so be it.
Online Society
I agree with west,
Although i believe a more inclusive title would be more appropriate. I suggest simply 'Orchids Online'. I think this would bring more ppl to the attention of the website and subsequently more members.
I would be more than happy to be one of those needed to achieve attendance requirements as i live in SEQ.
Formalising
The benefits of OOL are the ease of access and informallity for all who wish to submit content for information and for discussion.
I personally would wish it to stay in that format.
I believe that formalising OOL will not be beneficial ( might even be counter productive)and in the final analysis create more administration problems.
As for the funding aspect, would not a seperate bank account for OOL suffice for any short term appeals for specific projects. I don't think that the limited sums of money
involved would over-interest the tax authorities.
