Coelogyne fragrans

C. carinata?

I don't have a C. carinata but the one I've seen had only yellow on the labelum no brown markings. This pic looks a lot like my C. fragrans.

Coel carinata/fragrans

As I said, I find it very confusing. I have both fragans and carinata and a third called Coel truncata and understand that there are natural hybrids of these. I tend to use Dudley Clayton's book on Coelogynes as my bible and his photos don't help much either! BTW his picture of Coel carinata on p263 has very distinct brown markings on the labellum but you can't see the column in the picture.

I agree with Migocab on growing conditions but would suggest also that if you intend to grow it outdoors in Summer that you use coco chip or something that will hold plenty of moisture (or water it very freguently!) to keep the humidity up. Clayton suggests that it grows as low as 100m but wherever it grows in PNG it is going to be relatively high in humidity compared to Australia and especially southern Australia.

Many people successfully grow Coel speciosa and Coel fragrans will grow in the same conditions.

Thanks

Thanks for your advice. Yes, I agree re high moisture requirement. I grow several Coelogyne successfully in 50/50 coco chips and Perlite, in stright Perlite, in stright sphagnum and in 50/50 sphagnum and perlite. I do get in to difficulty with sphagnum as it tends to die on me and dead sphagnum results in orchid root rot. I grow C speciosa ok all year round under just shade cloth, but I'll take the C. fragrans in during winter.

Coelogyne fragrans

I concur with the majority of opinions here that the plant is the photo is one of the many variations found within the New Guinean species Coelogyne fragrans.
