Coelogyne fragrans

Coelogyne fragrans

I've just aquired this C fragrans and intend to grow it under shade cloth in Melbourne same as I do C. mooreana. Any advice as to how to grow it would be welcome.

Nice photo. Two of us that I know of are growing this in Canberra but in mildly heated glasshouses - afterall, it is a PNG orchid. My glass house frequently gets down to 8 or 9 degrees over winter. I think the relatively cooler winter for them at this temperature simply delays the flowering till a bit later in the season (like about now!) Mine get plenty of light, high humidity, lots of fertiliser and lots of watering.

What is really interesting is the confusion with Coel carinata. I have this flowering at the moment and it is reported to hybridise naturally with Coel fragrans. I also have another plant, Coel truncata, which could or could not be Coel carinata or a cross with Coel fragrans! I keep comparing the flowers of all of the above and get more confused than ever! Your picture has a very nice dark labellum and much more clearly defined stripes on the wings of the lip. I will post a picture of Coel carinata.

A bit warmer!!!

This plant is from moderate elevation, 500-1900m asl. Best kept indoors during winter and let it acclimatise before introducing it outdoors. Minimum of 8C. Very good windowsill plant.
