Jean, love this picture, the sharpness of the image, the presentation, the colours, the semi-transluscent petals and sepals and finally the lovely coloured lip. The plump blue-green terete leaves look dangerously healthy. There is a variety of this species named var. prenticei with pink stripes on the sepals, I believe that the leaves are also different.

I agree with you Bernard. This is a photo to be proud of! Well done Jean.
There are at least three distinct leaf types in this species which used to have varietal status however they are all simply the one species now. Personally I tend to agree with this as I have seen many intermediates between these leaf varieties.
Hi Buckie
Sony DSC-H50 Photo taken with basic lense that comes with the camera. I had to bite the bullet and upgrade to keep old Mac happy, the word blurred 'Queer things' is still ringing in my ears.
Hi Jean,
I have been looking at buying a new camera for a while, and decided to give the Sony DSC H50 a go, due to the very clear images you are getting.
So far its been very good, and I particulaly like the fact that its got a remote control, so I can set it up on the tripod and get no camera shake by using the remote. Very good for close ups of the more delicate flowers.
· ISO Sensitivity: Auto80/100/200/400/800/1600/3200
· Light Metering: Multi Pattern, Centre Weighted, Spot
· Exposure Compensation: (+/- 2.0EV, 1/3EV step)
· Live Histogram Indicator: Yes
· Sharpness/Contrast: Yes
· White Balance: Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent 1 (White Fluorescent Lighting), Fluorescent 2 (Natural White Fluorescent Lighting), Fluorescent 3 (Day White Fluorescent), Incandescent, Flash, One Push, One Push Set
· NR Slow Shutter: Yes (1/3 sec. or slower)
· Dynamic Range Optimiser: Yes (Standard)
· Face Detection: Yes
· Smile Shutter: No
· Other: Self Timer (10 sec./2 sec.), Function Guide, Home Button, Direct Playback Button, Auto Daylight Syncro, Histogram Indicator, Hand Shake Alert, Night Shot, NR Level Settings
FLASH
· Flash Mode: Auto, Forced-Flash, Slow Synchro, No Flash, Red Eye Reduction
· Flash Range: ISO Auto: 0.2-9.1m(W) / 1.2-5.5m(T), ISO 3200: up to 11m(W) / 18m(T)
· Flash Level Setting: (+/- 1 step)
· Auto Daylight Synchro Flash: Yes
SHOOTING MODES
· Scene Selection: Auto Adjustment, Easy Shooting, Program Auto, Shutter Speed Priority, Aperture Priority, Manual Exposure, Movie, High Sensitivity, Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Portrait, Landscape, Beach, Snow, Fireworks, Advanced Sports Shooting, Smile Shutter
It a very impressive camera and so easy to use, it doesnt say in the accesories supplied, but it does include a remote control which eliminates camera shake when taking shots on the tripod, I love it.
IMHO these are the key specs that says this is a damn good camera for the modest price.
FOCUSING
· Auto Focus Range: W:1cm-Infinity, T:120cm-Infinity
· Macro Auto Focus Range: W:1cm-Infinity, T:120cm-Infinity
MACRO: to be able to autofocus down to 1cm and get Jeans results is nice!
LENS
· Lens Type: Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar
· Focal Length (35mm conversion): 5.2-78.0mm(31-465mm) A Carl Zeiss 31-465mm zoom lens!!! Nice...probably a little too much zoom but it seems to give great sharp detail at the macro function end anyway. I suspect that it would be at full wide while taking macro shots like the one above
· F Number: 2.7-4.5 A lower F number would have been better but not too shabby either. The low one will be in full Wide and the high one will be at full Tele The lower the F number the more light and sharper the image becomes
· Optical Zoom: 15 Pretty good!
CONTROL AND SETTINGS
· Aperture Range: Auto(F2.7-F8.0)/Program auto(F2.7-F8.0)/Manual(F2.7-F8.0) Excellent control both manual and auto!
· Shutter Speed: Auto(1/4-1/4000)/Program auto(1"-1/4000)/Shutter Priority(30"-1/4000)/Aperture Priority(8"-1/2000)/Manual(30"-1/4000) Excellent control! So in manual you can have the shutter open for 30 seconds to get awesome night shots. You can also shoot off a tripod say under low light conditions in a controlled environment (no wind) and leave the shutter onen a bit longer to get good, high quality images!
· ISO Sensitivity: Auto80/100/200/400/800/1600/3200 ISO 50 would also have been nice but a very nice range to give great creative control
· Light Metering: Multi Pattern, Centre Weighted, Spot great control!
· Exposure Compensation: (+/- 2.0EV, 1/3EV step) great control!
IMHO there is only one thing I would have liked to see in these specs that is missing. The ability to save an uncompressed image...not a jpeg. Most people would not use this but in some cases it would be handy.
From the flower and foliage this would be Dendrobium prenticei, or D. lichenastrum var. prenticei if you prefer (or Davejonesia prenticei). True D. lichenastrum has small button-like leaves and flowers that are more open, but smaller than prenticei. D. lichenastrum is also generally striped on the sepals and generally a richer colour overall. Both taxa rarely grow together. Lovely miniature species, I grow numerous (and varied) clones of both. regards, voix109
Growers of this plant would agree with you Voix109 that this plant is Dendrobium prenticei (in my shed it is) but it has been lumped into Den. lichenastrum and we have to list it that way.
We could list it in the body field as Dendrobium lichenastrum var. prenticei and get around the Monocot List that way.
Yes Jean was "correct" that she said it was a Dendrobium, even more "correct" when she added the name lichenastrum but could have been "more correct" had she added the name prenticei in there somewhere!!!
Wellsy, I wouldn't have said that I was "incorrect in my assertion" - as I wasn't! What we do have is a difference of taxonomic opinion, and at what rank we classify this taxon.
Out of interest, the Australian Government uses the list of names ratified by the National Herbarium in Canberra for its determinations for "accepted names" of species. This is vitally important with recovery plans of rare and endangered species. If this orchid was the case study, the name Davejonesia prenticei would be the one used. (After all, they would only think of 'Kew' as a town on the mid-north coast of NSW!)
If the Australian Government (and almost all others around the world) would ensure that all botanical classification issues were brought to the attention of the international community for agreement, those issues could (on agreement) then become updated in the Monocot List. It's that simple.
We are all in the botanical mess we are in because most governments and botanists of the world are not united in their approach. The Monocot List is simply a database which is not perfect but is constantly kept updated. It reflects the current internationally 'agreed' status of international botanical nomenclature.
