Rhyncholaeliocattleya White Wonder

Rhyncholaeliocattleya White Wonder

Parentage C. walkeriana var. alba x Rlc. Donna Kimura 'Asa'

Rhyncholaeliocattleya White Wonder

Query on name

We purchased an orchid last year (in flower) whose label says it is C walkeriana 'Alba' x Bc Donna Kimura 'Asa'. When it flowers ( and it has flowered 2 since we have had it!!) the flower is white with deep yellow in the throat. We now have access to Orchidwiz, and I am questioning whether the name on our plant is correct, as both plants seem to have too much pink/mauve to create something as white as our plant.

I have attached a photo of our flower - can someone help me out please.

Um well

Just did a search for both parent's, they are both white's so your colour is correct, as far as I know this is a unregisted hybred.

Plant name

Hi Taketwo, I did a bit of research and I think your plant should be labelled Ryncholaeliocattleya (Rlc) White Wonder, but wait until you get more advise from wellsy or mcorchid. You can go to www.seagroveorchids.com/cattleyarelatives.htm to see a photo of white wonder. Hope that helps a little.

Davo....spot on!

You have done well Davo....spot on!

Did you go to the the RHS site via the Orchid books/How we check the validity of orchid names page ( http://orchidsonline.com.au/node/1994 ) to ( http://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/registerpages/orchidsearch.asp ) confirm that information? Yes then you would have no doubt found the below on the results page if you searched 'White Wonder':-

http://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/registerpages/orchiddetails.asp?ID=141904

On that result page there were four results (when I just searched) for the grex 'White Wonder' (When you are searching don't bother to add the genus name it can mess up the results for various reason)

It's all in the genes

Taketwo, your plant is correct with this registered name Rhyncholaeliocattleya (Rlc.) White Wonder.

Both parent plants come in white and pink colour versions.

There is not much separation between white and pink colour genes, if you flowered 100 hybrid seedlings of White Wonder from the same seed pod you would get both white and pink colour forms.
