How to effectively list your species plant here on Orchids Online
Is it a species? Yes. Then please try to start here (How to check your species plant name) to check your name is valid. This will save the admins a mountain of work in the long run. We will still check it but if you get it right at least we don't have to take the time to edit it for you.
Once you have determined the name of your plant is valid you should only use that name in the 'Title' area. Anything else you wish to add including valid varietal names as well as clonal or cultivar names or award information should be added in the 'Body' area (see more below).
Species Naming Convention
The Binomial Naming Convention for species dictates that all species names take the form of 1st name (Generic epiphet) - Capitalized first letter, 2nd name (specific epiphet) - all lower case and if there is a varietal name then add var. (variety) - all lowercase. Cultivar or clonal names should be inside single quotes.
So Dendrobium Speciosum becomes Dendrobium speciosum or could also be Dendrobium speciosum var. pedunculatum or Dendrobium speciosum 'Orange'
Further information
'Title' area
We would like all species listed as 1st name - Capitalized first letter, 2nd name - all lower case in the 'Title' area of your submission.
Please do not use a name for your plant something like D. Speciosum or Den. speciosum Sm., Exot. Bot. 1: 17 (1804) in the title area as this has major impacts on the way it is listed in the book pages as that list is sorted alphabetically. The title area also becomes the weblink so we like to keep this as brief as possible. In any case the already overworked admins will have to correct this for you if you do not stick to this policy.
'Body' area
In the 'Body' area we like to see a repeat of the title content initially and we allow (and encourage) you to use the full label details you have for the plant including clonal information or awards granted to the plant. Non recognised varietal names are also welcome here as these can give more information to the plants background. Also feel free to use abreviations like Den. Phal. Paph. etc within the 'body' area.
It would be wonderful if more of our contributors could add whatever snippets of further information they have about their plant as well in the body area as everyone who reads the page from then on will gain something just that little bit extra from your work.
You are welcome to make use of this template which can assist you in adding your information in a way that makes you listing stand out and fit the way we would like all our pages to look. In fact I personally use this template HTMLHelper and would recommend it as being quite easy to use.
Thanks!
Thanks again for taking the time to add your photos here on Orchids Online and especially for going the extra mile in listing it effectively. We love your work!
regards wellsy
