This looks like Papilionanthe vandarum. Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim is dark pink with well rounded flowers and large lip.

Tagged Aerides Miss Joaquim

Thats what was on the tag . Its normally alot darker , This year whitish with wee bit of pink but more flowers that are larger, then the previous years.

I agree that is doesnt look like Miss Joaquim going by a few links now...

another unknown orchid in my collection...

Labellum is different

The spur on the labellum is very distinctive in P.vandarum and not as much in P. Miss Joaquim

spot on migocab

this link definately confirms this plant is P.vandarum

Been hunting down pics to try and match up and this was the closest .. its cool that there is a range of colours in this species. Thats where it started to confuse me .

Change its name tag now.

vandarum

I think that photo is a little too fuzzy to get a positive ID on this.

Mitch, any chance of a better photo????

Bill

tomorrow i'll take a clearer

tomorrow i'll take a clearer pic when its sunny ... and change the pic ...

Clearer close up of flower...

Photos have been updated of flower and pic of plant / 3 flowers at different angles ...

I hope this helps in identifying this plant.

Cheers

Is this Papilionanthe

Is this Papilionanthe vandarum ? or another species of aerides ? label when i got it had miss joaquim on it ...

Yours is about right

I have seen Miss Joaquim and it is no where near this flower shape. It is very difficult to flower in the southern states and it requires full sun to flower. If you are growing your plant in a shed then it would not have flowered. And another thing to note is that the plant is very stiff and erect without the need of support for a couple of feet.

The spur behind the labellum is what distinguishes this plant from P. Miss Joaquim.

I have been told by a very wise man that tag(s) don't always represent a plant's identity.

i am finding that out that

i am finding that out that slowly tags can be wrong most times...

this one plant isnt supported except only by its aerial roots ... pic has stake only to be able to take a clear pic .

Forget Miss J.

She is not Miss Joaquim.

I like Papilionanthe vandarum as the most likely ID.

Mitch, I think the answer is in the side lobes on the column but your photo doesn't show this detail.

Bill

the last 2 links arent

the last 2 links arent working , but flower differance i can definately tell...

the last

the last one works!! Sorry about that.

Papilionanthe Mundyi

This is Papilionanthe Mundyi . Blooms look similar to vandarum as the hybrid the blooms have taken vandarum's characteristics.

Another simple common mistake by orchid growers is mis-identifying of Papilionanthe Mundyi – a primary hybrid between (Vanda) teres and (Aerides) vandarum.

Papilionanthe vandarum is twig like and scraggly looking plant and is dwarfed by Mundyi which is a more fuller thicker leaf plant and grow alot taller and up right.

I hope this is informative.

Papilionanthe vandarum

Mitch, Aerdv. Mundyi has a closed column, your flower is open, also the lip structure is very different not to mention your side petals are reflexed, Mundyi has nice round and flat side petals.

I still believe your plant is Papilionanthe vandarum.

Bill

Plant size

Mitch have you seen a vandarum 4N and 6N plant? Well they are as robust as Mundyi, they don't look scraggly and can grow several feet without support.

4N and 6N

Hi Migocab,

I will hunt these down as i know the genetically modified orchids are completely different like you have pointed out more robust and other stronger features.

Thanks for the tip, its greatly appreciated .

Cheers
Mitch
