Dendrobium striolatum

Dendrobium striolatum

Dendrobium striolatum

Name edit as per below discussion.

This belongs to a friend in Tassie and he feels it may be one of the Rats tails, but we can't make head nor tail of the name tag.

Thanks in advance.

Anton

Dendrobium!!!

Dendrobium striolatum I think. But what worries me is the second half of the tag, Redback is a hybrid between Den. Kingrose and speciosum.

The Redback Is throwing us too.

The tag doesn't seem right that's why I put it up here.

Wondering whether the grower has thrown a furphie, or has just plain stuffed up ?

Anton

"Red Back' is a clonal name

"Red Back' is a clonal name for a good Wattagan type of Den. striolatum which was used by Down Under Native Orchids in their breeding of terete Dendrobiums. I have a D. striolatum "Neville" x "Red Back" currently in flower and I'll take a photo of it later today and submitt it here. The plant in question is a D. striolatum and could be a division of the "Red Back" clone or, if it is a seedling, it could be a crossing of "Red Back" by another clone. My undestanding is that, by convention, the clonal name should be put in quotation marks.

See the photos of D

See the photos of D striolata 'Neville' x 'Red Back' just listed http://www.orchidsonline.com.au/node/4423

My Friend's reply

Quote:

"I have been told its a Dendrobium striolatum x 'Redback' 'Kel'
the cross came from the friend of mine, Allen Kelly, who gave me that division of his huge plant." End Quote:

Does this shed any light on it ??

Anton

I suspect that the plant

I suspect that the plant label of that hugh plant has been affected by the wear and tear of time as has the original plant label of my Den striolata 'Neville' x 'Red Back'. I find it most disapointing when the writing on a plant label becomes ilegible or when the label goes missing. I go to extra effort, when transcribing the plant name from an old label to a new one, to ensure that the name remains accurate

'Red Back'

After reading all of this and having the benefit of seeing the photo of the label I think this plant should be listed as Den. striolata 'Red Back'.

Couple of things, confusion with Den. Redback, Migocab is correct with what he said but that was the registered plant Den. Redback not the clonal name 'Red Back' (two words) as explained by West.

Anton, your friend received a nice plant with a poorly written label, it happens all the time, I suspect your friend has added the 'Kel(h)' to the tag to indicate he got the plant from Allen Kelly.

West, your knowledge of the clone 'Red Back' and this type of Dendrobium was invaluable.

If West agrees, we shall add 'Red Back' to the heading of this plants listing.

Thanks All

Thanks West, Bill et al, I knew you guys could solve it for us, I have passed the info on, and will have to get my friend to join and add some of his other photos of some of his plants.
