Phaius Charlesworthii
Hybrid formula: Phaius (australis x tankervilleae)
Given proper treatment this fabulous primary hybrid will reward your efforts with magnificent tall spikes of quite large and well displayed flowers.
These plants (Phaius) inhabit seasonally wet, boggy areas where they are under almost totally waterlogged conditions for extended periods. To reproduce this you should grow them in a good terrestrial mix with the addition of up to 50% perlite and well crocked and weighted in the bottom 1/3 to open up the mix. The pot should be immersed in a water container which has the level maintained at around 1/5 to 1/3 the height of the pot which contains the Phaius with the water changed often to prevent mossies and stagnant water. Otherwise they will grow in the garden or shadehouse conditions here in SE Qld.
I usually let them dry out a bit over winter and even remove the water container if it rains to stop them having wet feet over winter. Give them bright filtered light to just short of burning the fabulous pleated leaves.
