Leonara Appleblossom

Leonara Appleblossom

Name and genus edit as per below ID.

Caularthron hybrid unknown

EDIT: the original entry and the discussion below has led to the above name

Dendrobium unknown - needs a name????

Grateful if anyone could put a name to this Dendrobium. It looks like one of the so-called Aussie hybrids. I got a small piece from a friend (who does not know what it is) a year ago and it is now flowering on a tree but I cannot find any image on OOL or elsewhere that looks similar.

Hullo Bill Can you help

Hullo Bill

Can you help here? I have looked in a lot of places over the weekend to try to track this one down but am still drawing a blank. I realise there are thousands of hybrid possibilities and it's not the end of the world to just keep the plant as unknown.

Different one

Sorry Stephen, it's not the type of Den. that I grow, I think it may be a Formosan type hybrid.

I wouldn't mind seeing the whole plant (canes and leaves) if that is possible???

Bill

Unknown Dend. second pic

Hi Bill I attach as a separate entry a new picture (I can't fathom out how to add a pic to the existing image

Stephen

Interesting

This might sound odd but the flower looks more of a cattleya hybrid. This could be a Caulaelia or Laeliocatarthron

Unknown Den ?

Hi Stephen, I don't know the name of your plant but I'm sure it has Diacrium bicornutum as one of it's parents. I have Diacattleya Ptolemy and it is similar plus I have seen a couple of other crosses with Diacm. bicornutum as a parent and they are similar in shape. As a item of interest Diacrium has been crossed with 29 other natural and man made genus.

right track

I think you are on the right track pawpaw.

Thanks for all these comments. I have looked again at an amazing bunch in information, photos and descriptions and conclude (without any knowledge or real evidence) that these prescient suggestions above - Diacrium / Caularthon (is is now Caularthon?) are on the right track. Several flowers of hybrids of Caularthon look very similar. Most seems to have a strong scent too. Also shape of bud is very suggestive. Certainly not a Dendrobium I think, so apologies for wrongly labelling this original enquiry.
Best match (type of growth/shape of sepals/lip and canes) seems to me to to a hybrid of Broughtonia x Cattleya x Caularthon x Laelia named Tropical Snow which, apart from colour of flower, is an excellent match.

What a maze. Not a place for a newbie to be in. Thanks again for all the help.

well done to all!

Well by reading your very informed responce we can all see that you have gained a great deal from this exercise so all in all we have all had a win here!

Please don't in any way apologize for the original error....hey I think as long as everyone is patient and considerate here we will all learn a great deal and get great satisfaction from a process such as this.

So, how does everyone propose we should list this one?

Regards wellsy

How about

"queer thing"!!!! Just kidding.

I agree this has been a good learning experience and a special thanks to Migocab for steering us in the right direction.

As for listing this plant for now, I suggest we call it Caularthron hybrid unknown. We have no idea of the actual species breakdown to list it as Caulaelia or Laeliocatarthron hybrid unknown.

Bill

a plan!

sounds like a good plan Bill

Regards wellsy

Papillon, GOOD NEWS!!!

Stephen, I think we have solved your plants ID.

I believe your plant is Leonara Appleblossom with parentage Caulaelia Snowflake and Thwaitesara Orange Nugget, registered by Rod McLellan in 1992.

Leonara is a new genus name and replaces Iwanagaara.

This is a very complex hybrid containing 12 species across 6 genera. Extremely variable, colour from white, pink through to yellow and orange.

Thanks for this information. You guys really know your stuff! This site is a tremendous asset particularly to to novices groping their way. Incidentally I see on a Google search that there is already at least two alternatives given of the spelling of "Leonara" so mis-naming does not take very long to get entrenched
