Cattleya Species

Hi Horst, fantastic photos of Cattleya species.I'm sure they are going to instill in many orchid growers the urge to grow more of these wonderful plants. Don't you think they leave the hybrids for dead? Pawpaw

Cattleya species versus hybrids

Hi Pawpaw
Only a few plants, found in nature, have a good shape.
Then it takes hundreds of sib crosses to improve a specie. The result of the first sib crosses usually get less than 1% of reasonable shaped flowers. The plants I am able to show to you this season, are the result of at least 10 generation (50 years) of selecting and sib crossing. Nowadays some of the central american cattleya species have better shapes than the complex hybrids made from this species. Most of the species have still a lot to improve and we will be able to see many excellent flowers coming from the next generation of sib crosses. The same counts for primary hybrids and the use of species in future crosses with complex hybrids.
After all, the hybrids and the species will improve a lot in the near future.

var punctata

Hi Horst, magnificant photo, i have seen some photo's of the c. loddigesii var puntata's, but never realised there was a c. intermedia var puntata, do any of the other cattleya species have a var. puntata?

var. punctata

Hi Gooseman,
I know only the intermedia and the loddigesii species to have punctata as a variety.

Most of the bifoliate cattleya species type form is spotted. Look at
Cattleya aclandiae
Cattleya amethystoglossa
Cattleya bicolor
Cattleya guttata
Cattleya schilleriana
Cattleya tigrina
Cattleya velutina
