Bulbophyllum globuliforme - discussion

I understand that this species has a new generic name, has anybody any details.
Bernard

Bernardbulbo

Bernard, you have the correct name above, it hasn't changed to anything else.

regards Bill

Bulbophyllum globuliforme

Oncophyllum globuliforme (Nicholls) D.L.Jones et M.A.Clem., Orchadian 13(9): 421 (2001).

Regards Mick

Hmmm....

I reckon these two (D.L.Jones et M.A.Clem) must get paid by the amount of species they remove from their original genus. They also must get a bonus payment for coming up with their own recently described genera!

I really had not noticed too many people around who have changed their label yet on this advice.
Not that a whole lot of people will be growing Bulbophyllum globuliforme (Nicholls).

I think I should do a little more research and check what the status of their ongoing name changes is and report back here.

No offence to you Mick.

Regards wellsy

The plot thickens

Re- Name changes found at http://www.cpbr.gov.au/cpbr/cd-keys/orchidkey/html/namechanges.html
It mentions at the top, "The generic treatment of Mark Clements and David Jones in Canberra is used as a basis for this key. This treatment is not universally accepted"

also in the EXTENSIVE list below - Oncophyllum – segregate from Pterostylis

Well! How could a Bulbophyllum be placed in there I hear you ask? Better ask messrs D.L.Jones et M.A.Clem...LOL

These ones kill me - Jonesiopsis – segregate from Caladenia - Davejonesia – segregate genus from Dendrobium. Enough said.

Regards wellsy

No plot to thicken

There is no plot if we all stick by the rules.

We as orchid growers are governed by The Royal Horticultural Society for names of species and registration of hybrid orchids.

Mick, your info provided above (Jones/Clements, Orchadian 13(9):421 (2001)
looks good but it was not accepted in 2003 by The Board of Trustees of The Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew.

Oncophyllum as a genus was given synonym status only and we should all be using the accepted Monocotyledon, not the synonym.

I say again, the correct name for your plant Bernard is Bulbophyllum globuliforme.

Bill

Bulbophyllum globuliforme

Bulbophyllum globuliforme - is fine by me as are all the "old" names.
I am not changing any of mine. Just wanted to let Bernard know the
nomenclature he is refering to.

BTW I am growing my own ---- Mickenopsis Goochii too ! ;)

crack me up!

I missed this comment somehow in this earlier discussion.

LOL - Mickenopsis Goochii!!!

Mick you crack me up!

Regards wellsy

Bulbophyllum globuliforme

Many thanks to you all for your comments. I did have a plant of B.globuliforme 18 years ago but it only survived for 3 years and never flowered for me. However, I still use the pictures I have of this species to demonstrate the smallest and B.fletcherianum as the largest plants when I give talks on Bulbophyllum to different orchid societies.

Bernard

Bulbophyllum fletcherianum

Bulbophyllum fletcherianum is my all time favourite plant Bernard!
Certainly one of the most beautiful plants you could imagine and when the flowers come out I just melt!

Could I persuade you to share your photos of B. globuliforme here?

Regards wellsy

B.globuliforme / B.fletcherianum

The original images of my B. globuliforme were taken in 35mm slide form with a macro lense 18 years ago (with not very satsfactory results) but I did manage to save a decent picture and transfer it digitally for PowerPoint presentation. When I sort out this new laptop I am using and transfer my orchid images from the old computer I will share this piture with you together with other Bulbo images. EDIT: See Here http://orchidsonline.com.au/node/820

I am impressed with your Bulbo pictures Wellsy and concur with your thoughts on fletcherianum, all the species in sec Macrobulbum are fascinating but take up lots of space in the greenhouse I like the image of spathulatun which is not often seen.

Regards
Bernard

I will look forward to

I will look forward to seeing your photos when they go up Bernard.
Thanks for your kind words re my photos of the bulbos recently gone up on the site. The exciting part is that some of the best are still to come!

Oh, re the Macrobulbum issues...it simply requires a larger greenhouse...LOL!
