Oncidium tipuloides

Onc. colombae

Hello Migocab, I don't think this is Onc. colombae which is a synonym for the accepted name Trichocentrum stramineum.

Oncidium colombae

Hi,,Onc colombae is a synonym of what used to be a mule eared oncid known as Onc stramineum and has now been changed to Lophiaris stramineum and the flower is a pale straw yellow.

Colombiae

Hey guys, This plant doesn't resemble anything like a mule ear/ trichocentrum. The plant is very similar to a Cyrtochilum with elongated flat bulbs about 10 cm tall, leaves are long and narrow and the rhizome is about 3 to 4 cm long.

When I bought this plant it came with the tag named Onc. colombiae. Ian Walters of Species Orchids even agree with this name tag.

look elsewhere

The thing is that Onc. colombiae is not valid as you can see by searching the monocot list.

The closest match is Oncidium columbae which Bill has (like me) assumed to be the correct spelling and found to come up as Trichocentrum stramineum (the accepted name for the invalid Oncidium columbae).

If you say the plant is really a Cyrtochilum then we need to look elsewhere for the true name.

Regards wellsy

not sure

A person from Eden who specialises in Oncidium also has the same plant as I do when I showed him the my plant. I bought this plant from Orchid Species Plus 3 years ago, from their knowledge it was the right name tag.

But then again, this could be a mislabled unidentified species.

Onc. species unknown

So far we have wasted time on the labelling of this plant, we all know it is wrong. (edit to Onc. species unknown)

Now, does anyone have a clue to it's true identity???

Bill

That's great news Ian, well done.
