Bulbophyllum levanae

Albert

Hi Albert, I'm a little confused with this one, did you edit the name from Bulbophyllum basisetum to Bulbophyllum levanae????

Bill

Hi Bill, no it was not me,

Hi Bill,
no it was not me, think Wellsy changed it, but I'm not sure.
cheers
Albert

Looks that way

I can't understand why it was changed, there are no comments to explain it.

B.levanae

Looking through a magnifying glass, B.nyphopolitanum has a papillose lip. B.levanae doesn't.
The image shown is not B.basisetum which has a more compact flower (unlike the previous two mentioned species in which the flowers are more elongate. But these three species have a short (up to four inch long inflorescence)with one or two flowers showing at the same time.
There is version of B.levanae with yellow petals and sepals with fine red spotting also with a red/brown lip.
If you have access to back copies of the RHS Orchid Review, the Jan-Feb 2006 issue has an article by Wolfgang Rysy PhD, which gives the key to the different species in this section. Wolfgang asked me to help him with the English translation. His English is much better than my German, but we managed to get through the maze. The second part of this article appeared in the March - April issue 2006.

Which Bulbo is it??

Thanks Bern for eliminating Bulb. basisetum but we are still none the wiser as to the identity of Albert's plant above.

If it's not Bulb. levanae or Bulb. levanae var. levanae syn. Bulb. nymphopolitanum, is the photo above Bulb. levanae var. giganteum????

Bill

which one?

So from that can you say which one this is Bernard?

B.nyphopolitanum or B.levanae? Or is there not enough detail in this image?

Regards wellsy

B.levanae

Sorry for the confusion; If the lip of the pictured image is finely papillose then it is B.levanae var levanae (syn B. nymphopolitanum), if not, then it is a straight forward B.levanae.
