Vanilla planifolia

Marianne's great photo of a green and white Cattleychea unknown hybrid a day or so ago reminded me of some vanilla orchids that recently flowered for me. Not such a good photo but hope it might be of interest

Hi Stephen,
nice photo, i am growing vanilla orchids for years - no flowers. Some of my VO are bigger than 20 meters, growing in a tree.
Any idea how i can speed up the flowering process.

Vanilla orchids

Hi Albert

VO are a mystry to me. The flowering plant was a reject from a clearout of a friends garden. I put it in my shade house (I live in Far North QLD) on a tree fern log and it flowered within a few months. Only three of the flower bids opened, the remainder dropped off. The shade house is over head watered and humidity is higher than the garden. I have two other plants growing outside neither of which has ever flowered. I now have a piece of one in the shade house. Its growing OK but not a sign of flowers yet. I suspect they need quite carefully managed environment to flower well.

Vanilla

You guys are lucky, sounds like you both have it growing well, I've never had the pleasure of seeing one in the flesh.

Can you tell us which Vanilla it is????

vanilla pod treatment

hi migocab, if you should ever get a pod, you have to treat it before you can eat it. If you search the web you will find out more I am sure, I saw a show on TV once I think it was Madagaskar were they grow a lot of Vanilla, they also showed the treatment it is quite a process. Good luck
