Bernard and Wellsy
Hi guys, I'm not convinced this entry is Prosthechea cochleata, it doesn't really come close to Wellsy's submission of Psh. cochleata at http://orchidsonline.com.au/node/3027 which I believe is the correct plant.
Even with natural variation, the lips do not match and the sepals and petals on this one above are way too short.
Bill
Prosthechea fragrans
Ooops....as always you look like being correct Bill. My vote is really for what I have always known as Encyclia fragrans now better known as Prosthechea fragrans.
Regards wellsy
P cochleata
I bought this plant at auction recently for 50p, it was labelled Encyclia lanciana, as you know most of these species look-alike except for the original E. cochliata, you are probably right Bill in your assesment. I must confess that I know very little about this genus.

Psh. cochleata or fragrans?
Bernard, for 50p, about $1 Australian is a bargain price for this plant, good pick up.
Bought as Encyclia lancifolia (lanciana) which has been changed to Prosthechea cochleata var. cochleata, correct action if the plant was in fact Encyclia lancifolia to start with.
Wellsy has come up with a good lead as Encyclia fragrans which is now Prosthechea fragrans but there is also Encyclia fragrans var fragrans which has been changed to Prosthechea aemula, your plant looks similar to both but is not one of these in my opinion.
Both Prosthechea fragrans and aemula have stripes that fully extend to the bottom of the lip and have a spear like protrusion beyond the lip, your plant does not have these.
(sorry about the terminology, just don't know what the real words are to explain it)
All is not lost, your plant has stripes 3/4 of the way down the lip and ends in an arrow shape, I suspect Prosthechea trulla is the plant you have.
Hope that wasn't too confusing.
Regards Bill
cochleata or fragrans
Bill thanks for your comments, I do know P.fragrans, the scent of which is heavily sweet and overpowering. This plant of mine is scented but not to that extent.
