Don't know what to do with your unwanted Orchid Seedpods? I do...

Hi everybody,

How are you? I’m new to Orchids Online but have been involved in the hobby for some 13years since I was a teenager. I have grown a few different species of Orchid but my favourites are the Sarcochilus spp – mainly due to the fact that I have never had a glasshouse to grow the warmer climate orchid species. I’m a microbiologist by trade and, again since I was young, have had a keen interest in in-vitro culture of Orchids. That being the case I am interested in obtaining any unwanted seed pods that people may have. The seed pods need to be green and in good condition – they also need to be from known parents. I am not endeavouring in anyway to profit from these I simply want to grow in my knowledge and experience in the in-vitro culture aspects of Orchid culture. I also feel it would be a unique way to increase my personal collection with unique crosses and species that I may otherwise have not come across. I’m also more than happy to return some of the plants to the one who provided me with the pod and also swap amongst fellow orchid enthusiasts. In the future I would also be available to culture your seed pods at minimal cost to cover materials etc with me returning 100% of resultant plants.

If you have any pods that you don’t know what to do with I’d be more than happy to hear from you…

Kind regards and thanks

Mr invitro

I'm curious, you say green seed pods, why not dry seed????

Most orchid growers that set pods have the means or know someone that can process green pods.Dry seed would/may be available after the initial mother flasks germinated.

Thanks for your reply Bill,

Thanks for your reply Bill, green pods are easier to sterilise than dry seed. When you're plating the seed on agar it is the perfect medium for fungi to grown on. It is much harder to sterilise dry seed and as such few, if any, people that are able to culture orchid seed would accept dry seed due to the difficulties associated with obtaining a fungi free culture. Although i'm always up for a challenge...

H there, I think its an

H there,
I think its an excellent idea. Yes I could send you some green seed pots in the future - if you want them.
Thanks

Hello Albert, Thank you for

Hello Albert,

Thank you for your reply and i would absolutely love your greenpods...thank you. As i mentioned in the initial post i'm more than happy to return some of the plants to you after they are in pots. I just figure it's a good way of making use of something that might otherwise go to waste and also means that i can grow in my knowledge so that in the future i can help out fellow enthusiasts. I'm also hoping to learn the tissue culture side of things as well eventually so one day if you have a special orchid you would like more of i can tissue culture it for you...

What is your particular genus interests?

Regards
