genus information
Submitted by wellsy on Tue, 30/09/2008 - 08:46
An area of great need here on Orchids Online is the thousands of genus listings. There are quite a few which have some pretty good information but a whole lot more where there is nothing but the name. A quick browse through the Orchids A-Z area concentrating on the genus listings will give you a better idea.
As you know folks, this is a community effort here and I was really hoping some of our very knowledgeable regular contributors might like to help. For those of you who may be less experienced with orchids this task is also a great opportunity to increase your knowledge. Anyone could just start by looking through the various genus listings and then when they decide on one or two areas they would like to tackle they could just do a little research on the net, in the library, in your own or friends books. Then it is just a matter of writing up the fruits of that research.
Once you have done that please use my contact tab to let me know which genus (or...send me a list of genera!!!) you have some information for and I'll set you up as the author of that genus (or your list of genera)....easy eh!
Alternatively just submit your work as a comment on the genus listing you want updated....again I'll do the rest.
Thanks in advance for any help friends! The whole community here will applaud your efforts.

Uniformity
Hi Wellsy,
perhaps, for the sake of uniformity, you would like to give us a template to work from so that we all submit information in a standard format.
regards
alex
HTML Template (standard site format)
I could do that!
In fact I personally use this template HTMLHelper which I have modified slightly to give some guidance to users here.
Note: Add that page to your favourites and use your 'Back' button on your browser to get back here (or whatever page you are working on)
When it is used it produces results like this below:-
XX-Replace with species name here-XX XX-author info here-XX
Type Species: XXXX
Synonyms: XXXX
Tribe: XXXX
Subtribe: XXXX
Pronunciation: XXXX
Distribution: XXXX
Temperature: XXXX
Contributor XXXX
Hybrid formula: XXXX
Common name: XXXX
Originally submitted as XXXX. Name edit as per Monocot List.
Originally submitted as XXXX. Name edit as per RHS.
TIP: Replace 'XXXX' with your information.
NOTE: Use the lines you want only....delete the rest...the entire line please

Good Template
Thanks for this Wellsy.
