Thwaitesara (Rsc. Apricot Flare xx Thw. Painter's Brush x Rsc. Oconee) 'Orange Pumpkin'

Miss. Saigon

Is this the same cross

Buckie

Sorry Buckie, I'm a little confused about your question for this one.

The photo/cross above is different to Miss Saigon.

I think with the three photos of this cross above Hoang is showing us the variation from the same seed pod.Just like his two submissions of Miss Saigon, both different from the same crossing.

Bill

Fair enough,,,Then may I ask

Fair enough,,,Then may I ask what the parents of Miss. Siagon are???

No problem

Parents of Rsc. Miss Saigon are Rhynchosophrocattleya Apricot Flare x Sophrocattleya Lisa Ann.

Registered by Hoang in July 2007.

Don't you just love these new genus names!!!!!!!!

Bill

No, Blc.---Lc.---Etc. does

No, Blc.---Lc.---Etc. does me just fine, the rest just gets to deep for me:-)

I know what you mean

We are over a barrel with the new names, nothing we can do about it now, we just have to get used to them.

I was hoping the AOC and AOS would have put up a fight to stop the genus changes for hybrids but it looks like they didn't bother.
(The Hybrid Registrar has an option not to accept species changes in relation to hybrid registrations)

Bill

I just don't understand how

I just don't understand how they get Sophro when to me it should reflect what the parent is. ie Laelia Cattleya Lisa Ann

It's easy

There are 12 species in the background breeding of Lisa Ann.

One or some, maybe all the species have had a genus change, that then changes the hybrid genus (in most cases).

If you give me some time I can break Lisa Ann down to species level and we will both know which specie or species have changed.

It will help you understand what is going on with our Catts.

Bill

Here we go Buckie

This is the breakdown of the old Lc. Lisa Ann.
All Cattleyas, dowiana 51.17, trianae 7.81, wallisii .39, warscewiczii 10.94, mossiae 2.34, schilleriana 3.13, bicolor 3.52, warneri 3.52, labiata 4.69. Total 87.51%

Former Laelia species, xanthina .39, cinnabarina 1.56, tenebrosa 10.55. Total 12.5%

Those three Laelia species are now Sophronitis and is why the old Lc. Lisa Ann is now a Sophrocattleya Lisa Ann.

Told you it was too easy. lol

Hope that helps a little Buckie.

Bill

Thanks, Bill

Thank you for your assistance. Actually, I am not familiar with the new classification system from RHS. Like Buckie, before receiving the acceptance letter from RHS for Miss Saigon, I did not know about the change that was made for genus name. That hybrid was first registered as Blc. Miss Saigon = Blc. Apricot Flare x Lc. Lisa Ann. After that, the genus names was changed by RHS as noticed at the acceptance letter. However, they did not explain anything to me. Therefore, your explanation here about why Lc. Lisa Ann becomes Sc. Lisa Ann is very helpful. Thanks!

Thank You also

The muddy waters run a little clearer now, the only way to learn is ask and I shall now ask does that mean that any Cat's in my collection that have a Lc. in their name now becomes Sc. ?????

Lc's still valid

No Buckie, it's not that easy to make a blanket change like that.

Lc. might still be valid for some of your plants, all the Laelias didn't change to Sophronitis and they have added about half of the Schomburgkia to Laelia.

The only time I check the genus/name is when I take it to a show or a submission is made to this Website.

In my backyard they are all Catts unless they get a car ride.

Bill

Car ride

Oh Bill I love your humor, that last sentence was a ripper!!
Christine

thanks

I shall leave it to the people in charge at the Townsville Orchid Society to make the changes then,,, Thanks again
