Bulbophyllum ecornutum
Section: Sestochilus
Distribution: Thailand, Borneo and Java.
A remarkable species, the flowers are presented facing upwards and the sepals are swept backwards leaving the lip and pollinia exposed.
Generally there are no polliniam stalks in Bulbophyllum species. This is one of five species in this genus with a Hamulus,(a bulb like attachment to the pollinia) which in evolutionary terms is considered to be a relic or of an ancestral character.
The other unusual feature of this species is the movement of the lip, in the majority of Bulbophyllums the lip rocks backwards and forwards. In B. ecornutum there is also a slight sidewards movement. Look at the position of the saddle-shaped lip in the picture.
