Probably a hybrid

It is probable that this is a (complex) hybrid, with it's unique colour distribution coming from the species Dendrobium affine (Den. dicuphum). Such hybrids are popular pot plants in Thailand and Hawaii. Sadly, they have often been sold as "Dendrobium bigibbum" to attract species enthusists and thus widen their customer base.

Lonne's Nursery (Qld) sold a lot of this "style" about a decade ago.

Note how the sidelobes of the labellum do not enclose the column.

A very pretty flower, but not a true example of the species Dendrobium bigibbum in my book. There are a lot of hybrids out there under this name though.

Thanks

Thankyou for the nice comment about the pretty flower.

Yes I noticed the side lobes but there is a lot of variability with bigibbums these days, you only have to look at the line bred ones and see the difference in quality compared to wild versions.

By the way, when I did this cross I certainly made sure both parent plants were true bigibbums.
